Vacation in Houston, Texas

The rising cost of gas causes everything to go up. A weekly trip to the grocery store that once cost $80 is now $100. Vacations that are closer to home are becoming more popular this summer and some are even vacationing right here in Houston, Texas.

One of my fondest memories of vacationing with my family was our Houston vacation. Granted, we didn't actually live here but we were only one hour away.

My Dad found a condo-suite that we thought was amazing. Of course, at that age, anything bigger than your room is amazing.

Anyway, our weekend was spent: going to an Astros game, spending all day at Astroworld (showing my age), eating Antone's sandwiches (a family favorite), riding the train at the Houston Zoo, and skating at the Galleria.

Most of our other vacations had long car trips. In my opinion, five people in a car is no vacation. The one hour trip to Houston was just about all I could handle and it still is.

If you are looking to squeeze in a short vacation, I've found some great coupons at VisitHoustonTx.com for you to use while you're out and about. There are several attractions that have great buy-one-get-one-free coupons. And Freckletown has some great Houston area coupons as well.

Galveston is also a close-to-home destination. I found Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens coupons you can use while you are there. Check out Galveston.com for other Galveston area attractions.

A great website to check out is AllAcrossTexas.com before you travel. You'll save money and find some interesting things to do at your chosen vacation spot.

Wherever you go, take lots of pictures and enjoy being together as a family. It's the fun that your children will remember, not the destination.

Just got back from a Galveston vacation and it was awesome! Highlights: Railroad Museum on the Strand, Schlitterbahn, Willie G's Seafood Restaurant, Starbucks (of course!), beach at San Luis Pass

All Across Texas is a great site and I didn't know anything about it. We travel quite often so it will come in handy. Good tip.
