It's true, words do hurt and can cause more damage inside than getting hurt on the outside.

Protecting our children from bullies while they are at school is impossible. There is an ever-increasing amount of bullying in schools all across the U.S. and even, dare I say it, in Katy, TX. It happens everywhere.

No one is immune to being face to face with a bully. The ever-increasing amount of websites that address this problem is growing rapidly.

Studies show that 64% of kids have been bullied at school. Many children are either the ones bullied or have watched someone be bullied.

Educating your child is the best way to ensure he/she has the tools needed to deal with situations that may arise due to bullying. Teach them the characteristics of a bully and the characteristics of a victim.

Encourage them to always report an incident to an adult. Secrecy and fear causes the problem to grow.

Characteristics of a bully:

• Have a strong need to dominate other students to get their way
• Impulsive and easily angered
• Defiant and agressive toward adults
• Show little empathy toward others

Characteristics of a Victim:

• Cautious, sensitive, quiet, shy, isolated or withdrawn
• Anxious, insecure, low self-esteem, unhappy
• Depressed
• Relates better to adults than peers
