Watch this video which shows Max the Elephant Dog. He is a recent addition to the Houston Zoo family. Recently found abandoned on the side of the road, Max now lives in luxury at the McNair Asian Elephant Barn.

His full name is Maximus. He was named after the scientific name for elephants (Elephas maximus)

Not only was he brought here as a rescue mission, but Max also serves a very important role in training and enrichment of our elephants. He is willing to be trained and the elephants take notice of how he behaves.

Keepers hope that Max will lead the way for elephant training, serving as a "middleman" between them and the elephants.
