The Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) invites families, schoolchildren, scout groups, neighbor associations, and all nature lovers to its Nelson Farms Preserve for the third annual Flat Out Fun Day on Saturday, Nov. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Flat Out Fun Day is a prairie celebration held each fall where hundreds of people can learn about and enjoy Houston’s hometown habitat with fun and educational activities such as dip-netting in a real wetland, sweeping for butterflies and other prairie insects, animal track crafts and calling, hayrides, and much, much more.

“Flat Out Fun Day is a way to get kids to dig their hands into the prairie and learn about about the present-day and historic activities on the prairie,” says Jaime Gonzalez, KPC’s Community Education Manager.

KPC will have activity booths covering historical uses of the prairie such as farming, ranching, and hunting that explain about how rice is grown, harvested, and packaged and how to make a duck call in the early morning in the duck blinds. “It’s important for people to connect with their surrounding environment — a lot of times people are shocked to hear rice is grown around here,” Gonzalez continues. Other booths will include insects, mammals, wetlands, and orienteering. “There will be many ways for to fulfill scouting requirements, such as the orienteering course, which is new this year.”

Families and groups of all ages are welcome at Flat Out Fun Day. Everyone who participates must sign a release form. Parents must sign release forms for children under 18. Other Details Here
