As much as I hate to admit it, in four short weeks Katy kids will be going back to school. Yikes! Just when we've settled into our summer routine and things are going well, we have to start planning for the beginning of a new school year.

For those Katy families hoping to save money on supplies, though, this is the time to shop. With new backpacks, school supplies, shoes, clothes, and school lunch items it can be a financial strain for some families.

Even if you take one summer day and get your shopping done now, you'll be glad you did later. Not only will you save money, you will find items in stock, miss the long lines, and be able to enjoy the last days of summer having fun (instead of stressing).

If you need to help curb the expense of all the back to school items here are a few money saving tips:

• Print grocery coupons and then stock up for kid-friendly school lunch items now
• Visit resale shops:  The Children's Carousel in Katy, Katy Christian Ministries,  Goodwill Select on Kingsland and Mason
• Use freecycle.org to find items needed or to trade
• Exchange clothes and shoes with friends

For those who can afford it, remember that the YMCA is taking donations for Operation Backpack now through August 14th. What a great way to show your children the importance of helping others.
