Valentine's Day can either be a fun, family event or something out of a nightmare. Celebrating as a family on Valentine's Day and then celebrating with your spouse on another day may take away the expectation and pressure from having a "perfect, romantic" dinner.

Children enjoy expressing their love to friends and family members. Celebrating with them will encourage them to express those feelings as well as the whole family spending quality time together. Keeping them in mind as you plan your family's Valentine's Day will ensure that everyone enjoys the day.

Not only will you miss all the lines at the restaurants, but you will be able to truly enjoy what Valentine's Day is all about... showing and sharing love.

• Surprise your family with heart pancakes. OR if you have an aspiring chef in the family, let them help you.
• Have your kids make their own pinata out of a cereal box. Fill it with heart goodies.
• Buy silly string and give it as a gift to all family members (including yourself) and then... let the games begin
• Roll out butcher paper to cover the table and let everyone write words of love and appreciation to other family members. Read during dinner.
• Set the table with your finest china (yes, even with little ones). Talk about why the dishes are special, how you and your husband met, your wedding. Show pictures. Kids LOVE hearing about their parents' love for each other. Single? Invite another single Mom/Dad over and enjoy a meal together.
• Have a candle for each member of the family. During dinner each member lights a candle and tells what the other family members do that tells them they are loved.
• Ask your children, "How can I be a better Mommy/Daddy to you?" You may be surprised at their answers.
• Plan several crafts to do as a family. Creating art together allows for great conversation.
• Make your family's favorite dessert.
• Rent a family movie and enjoy a pajama movie party complete with pink popcorn. (Melt white chocolate and add food coloring. Poor over popcorn and let cool.)
• Put the kids to bed and enjoy the evening with your spouse.
