2009 Summer Reading Programs for Kids in Katy

Summer reading programs are a great way to encourage your child(ren) to continue reading throughout the summer.

Programs offer incentives of all kinds so check them out to find the one your child is interested in.

Summer Reading Clubs:

  • Harris County Libraries- Begins Friday, June 5th, 2009. Read 10 books and earn a "certificate" (Katy library gave out free books last year so check with your library for rewards)
  • Barnes and Noble- read 8 books and get a book for free as a reward
  • Half Price Books- June 1-July 31st. Kids ages 12 and under. $3 Gift Card to Half Price Books for each week they read at least 15 minutes per day.
  • Fort Bend Libraries- Sign up online beginning June 1st. Rewards include: 5 books - Bookmark, 10 books - Pencil, 15 books - Certificate, 20 books - Reading Trophy
  • Houston Public Libraries- June 1-August 1, 2009. Lots of incentives to choose from. Check website for specifics.
  • Katy Budget Books- 2450 Fry Road, Houston, TX 77084. Call: 281. 578.7770. Summer Children's Program every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m
  • Scholastic- Read and log 4 books and Scholastic will send a book to a child in need. Free printables.
  • Sylvan Learning Centers- read books, take an online quiz to earn points, redeem the points for printable prizes.
  • HEB Buddy Reading Program- read 10 books and receive a t-shirt, certificate, and 20 point sticker (one per household)
  • Borders- Kids 12 and under read any 8 books to receive 50% off selected merchandise.
  • BookWorm Shop- 22764 Westheimer Pkwy, Katy, TX. Reading Clubs available. Call to join: 281-693-READ
  • Chuck E Cheese's- Print out and record reading on Reading Calendar (2 weeks) and get 10 free tokens with food purchase.

Reading Fun:

Try having a "Reading Day" with your children this summer. Decorate a canvass reading bag, take a trip to a bookstore or library, create a reading journal, or wear your PJs all day and take turns reading to each other. Get other ideas for your day of reading here.
