WHAT: In partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico and Maseca, the Children’s Museum of Houston will hold several engaging, hands-on activities in which children will have the opportunity to learn about the arts and traditions of Mexico during the Day of the Child Celebration!
The event focuses on enriching kids’ lives with the value of bilingual literacy. The Museum’s Para los niños program helps Spanish-speaking parents get involved in their children’s education by offering the educational resources they need, free of charge.
- Family Motto—Create a family shield that represents the uniqueness of your family. This is another way of storytelling.
- Planting a Rainbow—After reading the book Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert, explore flower shapes and colors, and create a flower mosaic masterpiece in the garden.
- The Butterfly Alphabet—Play a matching game based from the book by Kjell B. Sandved, The Butterfly Alphabet.
- Storytime in the Library—Come to the Parent Resource Library to hear a story and then take home a book
- Eat the Alphabet—Sort through fruits and veggies putting each next to the letter it starts with.
- Pattern Bracelets—Read books by Latinos about colors and color patterns, and then create your own patterns in circular fruit cereal.
- D.W. the Picky Eater—Think about your favorite foods and what makes up a healthy meal, and then use pictures from magazines to create a “meal” on a paper plate. Piñata Workshop: Learn how to make this traditional Mexican craft.
- Spotlight Performance: Mariachi Hermosura Juvenil. Enjoy the spectacular sound of Mexico! 3 p.m.
- Treats and Beverages: Special Maseca cookies and toys for kids and Maseca recipes and giveaways for moms!
- Book Giveaways and More! For the whole family to take home and enjoy.

- Included with general Museum admission: $7 per person and $6 for seniors 65+. Children under 1 and Museum Members receive free admission. Free Family Night every Thursday 5 – 8 p.m.
