A symbol of good fortune and sign of intense power, the Oriental Dragon is regarded as a divine beast.  It is a creature of myth and legend and it is said to be a deliverer of good fortune and a master of authority.  Snake your way over to the Children’s Museum of Houston as we celebrate the Year of the Dragon with ardent activities and fiery performances during our Lunar New Year celebration.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

  • Enjoy the festivities to kick off the Year of the Dragon!Lion Dance:  Watch the lions boogie to the beat of the drums.  Enjoy an exhilarating performance of this Chinese traditional dance.
    Event Time:  2 p.m. in the Brown Auditorium.
  • Traditional Dances:  Discover the symbolic expression of dance as the Oriental Arts Education Center, Anjali Center for Performance Arts and the Tropical Rhythms Teens Dance Troupe enlighten with unique performances.
    Event Time:  2:20 p.m. through 3 p.m. in the Brown Auditorium.
  • Dragon Dares:  Immerse yourself in creativity at our six different activity stations. Discover why arts are an important part of Asian culture through lei making, henna hand writing, calligraphy and more!
    Event Time:  All day long.

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES:

  • Kick off the Year of the Dragon at the Museum!Dragons on Parade:  Dragon parades are traditionally used to celebrate this holiday. Design a colorful dragon costume at the Alexander Art Academy.
  •  Explore the Science of Colors:  Discover how fireworks, which originated in China, get their fantastic color at Science Station.
  • Chinese Door Hanger:  Welcome good fortune into your home this year at Junktion.
  • Chinese Fan:  Come to Junktion and fasten yourself a pretty fan.
  • Dragon Puppet:  Bring a dragon to life at Junktion.
  •  Tantalizing Tangrams:  Play a traditional Chinese shape puzzle game.
    Event Time:  2 – 6 p.m. at the ExxonMobil Math Cart.
  • Chopsticks Game:  How fast can you move in this Chinese New Year game?
    Event Time:  2 – 6 p.m. at the ExxonMobil Math Cart.
