What was life like for the pioneers of early Texas? How did they dress? What skills did they need to survive? Where did the children go to school? What kinds of animals did they own? These questions and many more will be answered for those who attend the Twenty-fifth Annual Katy Folk Life Festival.
On Saturday, April 10th, 2010 the Katy ISD Outdoor Learning Center will be transformed into scenes of the late 1800’s, as many demonstrations and activities of pioneer life are recreated from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Presentations at the festival include:
• Blacksmith demonstration • Texas cowboy camp • Honey Bee Keeping • Pioneer tool demonstrations • Texas Pioneer Soldier Reenactment Groups • Cheese Making • Dulcimer players
Hands-on Activities include:
• Horseshoeing • Weaving • Weaving demonstrations • Calligraphy • Pioneer cooking • Tin Punching • Corn grist mill • Roping skills • Pottery making • Dulcimer lessons • Spinning and quilting • Corn husk doll making • Farm animals • Pottery clay • Homing pigeons • Gourd Painting • Native American Culture Exhibits • Corn Husking, Shelling & Grinding • Pioneer crafts • Rag Doll Making
Visitors will also be able to walk the nature trails, visit the duck pond, and see the displays and exhibits in the science and history classrooms. The Katy Folklife Festival is a family fun activity with interesting lessons in Texas History. The Outdoor Learning Center is located west of the Katy ISD Administration Building at 6301 South Stadium Lane, Katy, TX. 77494. Take exit #740 off I-10, north on FM 1463, and follow the signs.
Admission is $1.00 per person.
McDonald’s restaurants owners, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Glaser are co-sponsoring the festival and will provide food concessions. |
