CMH celebrates the celebration that officially starts from Texas, Juneteenth
June 18 - 19
WHAT: Juneteenth celebrates the day when the enslaved blacks in Galveston heard about the Emancipation Proclamation for the first time, it started back in 1866. This followed after President Lincoln said that people no longer be kept as slaves. Juneteenth becomes the official holiday in Texas in 1980, as proposed by State Representative Al Edwards from Houston, Texas in 1979. Celebrate and learn more about Juneteenth with kinds of fun activities at the Museum.
ALL-WEEK ACTIVITIES:

Juneteenth Timeline: Kids can make a timeline of events related to Juneteenth, and draw pictures to explain about the event.

Juneteenth a Texas Holiday: Check out our Parent Resource Library for the Juneteenth: Freedom Day by Muriel Miller Branch, to learn more about Juneteenth.

Test Your Knowledge: Play while you explore some important accomplishments African Americans have reached by playing African American Achievement Scavanger Hunt.

Building Bonanza: Put on your hard hats and be a construction worker for a day at the Science Station, where you can build kinds of things.

Farm to Market: Learn about local Texas produce and the seasons in which they can be found in local markets or grocery stores.

Included with general Museum admission: $7 per person and $6 for seniors 65+. Children under one and Museum Members receive free admission.
